Funny, But All Too Real Story

Over a year ago, I declared (loudly to myself) that “Online videos are one of the best ways to help inspire people by sharing my message with the world. I’m going to create some videos and share many of the lessons I have learned from my almost 15 years as a Real Estate Investor. From these videos, I will encourage people to live inspired lives” #boom #micdrop #whatacrockofBS

A year later, yup, you guessed it… not one video was created, a massive fail, BIG RED X for me… I suck!

You don’t understand…

I MUST get this perfect. The perfect lighting, audio, microphones, editing, software, music, intro’s, outro’s, what will I wear… and don’t get me started on all the rabbit holes you can jump into to find the perfect video camera(s)… argh!

Testing, testing, and more testing, “check, mic check… test 1, 2, 3 mic check.” I think I drove everyone, around our house, crazy.

The endless researching… I was stuck, stuck in the fear of looking bad, saying the wrong things, and what if I turn the camera on, record something, and I get a negative review… devastation.

Finally, this past weekend, once again testing ANOTHER new microphone and a camera combination. I must get this perfect. Corinne (my amazing wife) walked up to me and I thought she was going to tell me how proud she is of me and that you are working so hard at getting this perfect…

BUT… Instead, she said:

“Why don’t you actually turn that stupid thing on… and record something… You need to SHOOT THE PUCK”

Ouch, that hurt, worst of all was that she used some of my own teaching & coaching against me. ‘Shoot The Puck’ is one of my signature coaching stories I give people who are stuck and afraid to take the next step.

Sometimes, the truth is very freeing, but it will first piss you off… I was defending my position of inaction, and I actually heard myself saying “You don’t understand… I must get this perfect…” I was very upset at Corinne for saying this, and I tried to make her wrong for telling me the truth. #epicfailonmypart

I guess I just didn’t want to hear the truth.

THAT was just what I needed to hear. Sometimes, you need those closest to you, the people whom you love and respect the most, to call you out on your… well, umm… Shite.

Now, what does this story have to do with getting started and taking the next step with Real Estate Investing… everything.

Getting started, taking that next step, is the hardest step to take. Getting past the ‘good idea,’ the book reading, the endless research, I must be perfect is a difficult step. A step that some will NEVER actually take.

I did the same thing after I read my first book on Real Estate Investing; I attended a networking event, and then got stuck in the ‘I can’t get going, I have to do more research’ mode.

Amazing things happen once you take action, and START…

Not until I actually shot the puck and bought my first property, things then shifted in a massive way… and I’ll save that story for another video ☺

You need to take the next step that’s right for you… but you need to do something.

It’s not going to be perfect, you are not going to know all the answers, you may very well be embarrassed, you will most definitely make some wrong decisions, and heck, you may even get some negative feedback from family and friends.

Something magical happens when you “Shoot the Puck.”

So here you go, my first video. It’s not perfect, far from it, it’s real, it’s me… and most important of all, my wife made me do it ☺. 🙂
