Only 15 Years Late…

A Shining Example of Futility

Recently, someone I love and respect shared with me something called a F#@k- up list, with the comment “I thought you’d enjoy this”.

Hmmm, I’m not sure what they were trying to tell me, but it was a thoroughly entertaining read.  Wow, I could fill up multiple volumes on this subject and have brand new fresh content created daily.

Perhaps I’ll come out with the monthly F#@k- up report, a place to share what didn’t work that month, the key learnings and next steps.

To celebrate the first entry on this new website, I am going to share with you one of my BIG F#@k- up’s (just one of many that I could choose from).

315 Million Blinks and Counting…

Up until just a couple days ago, if you came to this website you would see a construction sign with a blinking light, and a message of “This site is currently under construction, please visit again soon”.

Russell Westcott Website

This site has been under construction for the past 15 years.  That traffic light has been blinking everyday as a reminder.  A shining beacon of futility.

iPod Gen. 2

Embarrassingly to say, I have had this domain registered for the last 15 years (to be precise October 10, 2002), and yup, nothing has been created on this website since…

  • Apple introduced the second generation of the iPod, with the touch wheel (this is even before the click wheel).  Anyone remember those?
  • The Sanyo SCP-5300 became the very first cell phone to have a built-in camera to be released in the US (and the world would NEVER be the same again).
  • The platform this website is using (WordPress), had not even been launched yet (May 23, 2003).
  • And most importantly, Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears officially broke up… devastation!

To the best estimation, that blinking construction light has been working overtime.

  • 40 blinks/ minute
  • 2,400/ hour
  • 57,600/ day
  • 21,024,000 year
  • 315,360,000/ 15 years

Yikes… 315+ million constant flashing reminders.  Today’s the day we turn off the blinking light.

I can either beat myself up over this fact (which I am very good at) or do the work and get it done.  If you are reading this entry here, you can see the latter was chosen.

Here is my first blog entry, and I am going to share with you some inspiration and encouragement if you are feeling stuck.

Be More to Do More

F#@k- up’s…

Be active with your F#@k- up’s, everyday obstacles will be placed in your way, but you always have the choice to do the work starting right now.

If you stack enough days of doing the work on top of each other, that thing that once stood in your way will be a distant memory in the rearview mirror.

F#@k- up’s are only data points and unavoidable.

The Obstacle is the Way

The good news is that F#@k- up’s, even massive ones, contribute to your personal development; they are an essential part of experimentation and a precursor to innovation.

Don’t worry if you’ve F#@ked-up and made a mistake — everyone has.  These are truly the tuition you must pay on your personal success journey.  At a worst-case scenario, it could be that the purpose of your life is only to serve as a warning to others. .

One of my favorite quotes from the book by Ryan Holiday, The Obstacle is The Way.

“See things for what they are.  Do what you can.  Endure and bear what you must.  What blocked the path now is a path.  What once impeded action advances action.  The Obstacle is the Way.”

If you are not sure where to start, here are a couple of simple things you can do today;

  1. Create your F#@k- up list
  2. Own it, take responsibility for it
  3. Burn it… have a party
  4. Start a new list, of things you want to accomplishment
  5. Start this new list from a place of how you are going to create value and contribute to the well-being of others
  6. Ask for support from your network
  7. Let the things you F#@k- up on be the fuel to keep you moving forward.  Use this list to inspire you
  8. Pick 5 things you can do today
  9. Do the work
  10. Repeat steps #8 & #9 daily

One final thing to consider, if you find you are getting stuck and beating yourself up over your F#@k- up list, remember this following high-level coaching from Bob Newhart… “Stop It”

Time To Retire The Blinking Light…

It’s time to turn off the blinking traffic light.  I guess 15 years & 315+ million blinks is long enough.  You have done your duty and served as a beacon for all these years, but the time has come…OFF!

This is the first of many blog entries that will be shared on my website.  This will be a place where I will share my thoughts, insights & random musings.  And maybe nobody will read any of these entries…but that’s ok.

Is there something that has been on your ‘to do’ list for the past 15 years.  Either let it go, or do something about it today!

“The secret of getting ahead is getting started”
~Mark Twain.

Keep moving forward and #ShootThePuck, #DoTheWork & #WinTheDay

If you feel comfortable…share your F#@k- up’s below, or share this with a friend who needs to hear this right now.
